A meatball is a generally mass of ground meat that is typically rolled meat comprised of rolled ground beef and other ingredients, such as bread or breadcrumbs, minced onion, various spices, and possibly eggs, cooked by frying, baking, steaming, or braising in sauce. Ingredients: 1 pound extra lean ground beef 1/3 cup bread crumbs 1/4 cup finely minced scallions 1 egg 1 teaspoon dried parsley 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 medium onion, chopped 2 large cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes with basil 2 (15-ounce) cans tomato sauce 1 (6-ounce) can tomato paste 1 tablespoon dried basil 1–2 teaspoons dried oregano 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese Preparation: Mix ground beef, bread crumbs, scallion, egg, parsley, salt, Worcestershire sauce and pepper together. Shape into 1-inch balls with dampened hands. Heat the olive oil in a large Dutch oven or skillet over medium heat. Saute onions for 3 minutes. Add garlic and cook for another minute, stirring frequently, until fragrant. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste and pepper, if desired. Add basil, oregano, balsamic vinegar and parmesan cheese. Bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes. Add meatballs. Simmer, stirring often, for 30 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through and flavored with the sauce. Serve with toothpicks.
